Quick answer: On most Vaillant boilers, F61 means the control board can’t operate the gas valve, because of a fault in the valve, its wiring or the circuit board. On the newest ecoTEC plus models, F61 means an internal control board timing fault instead. Either way it’s engineer work. Try one reset, then call a Gas Safe engineer if it comes back.
F61 confuses a lot of Vaillant owners, and with good reason. Vaillant changed what the code means on its latest boilers, and its own website only describes the newer version. So if you’ve looked it up and the explanation didn’t match your boiler, that’s probably why. Because F61 usually involves a main component, it’s also a common tipping point for older boilers. If yours is over 8 years old and out of warranty, a new gas boiler from an Edinburgh installer is worth pricing up.
What does the Vaillant F61 error code mean?
F61 means one of two things, depending on when your boiler was made.
| Boiler | What F61 means | Parts usually involved |
|---|---|---|
| ecoTEC plus and ecoTEC pro up to around 2023, ecoFIT pure | The control board can’t actuate the gas valve | Gas valve, wiring harness, PCB |
| Current (remastered) ecoTEC plus | An internal control board timing fault | PCB, wiring, fan, air-mass sensor |
If you’re not sure which you have, check the model name on the data badge under the boiler or in your user manual. Newer models show the code as F.061.
On older models, the circuit board sends a signal to open the gas valve when the boiler needs to fire. F61 means that signal isn’t getting through, or the valve isn’t responding. On the newest models, a gas valve connection fault has its own code (F.088), and F61 covers an electronics timing problem.
What causes a Vaillant F61 fault?
On most boilers in homes today, the gas valve is the most likely cause, followed by wiring and the circuit board.
- Faulty gas valve. The coils inside the valve can fail with age.
- Wiring or plug fault. A loose, burnt or corroded connection between the valve and the board.
- Circuit board (PCB) fault. The board itself stops controlling the valve properly.
- Fan or air-mass sensor. On the newest ecoTEC plus models only.
Is F61 a gas supply problem?
No. Some websites list gas supply as a cause, but Vaillant’s manuals don’t. Gas supply problems show up as different codes, such as F28, F29 or F54. It’s still worth checking your hob works, just to rule the supply out.
How do you fix a Vaillant F61 error?
There’s not much to do yourself with F61, because the causes are all inside the boiler.
- Check other gas appliances work and your prepay meter has credit, to rule out a supply problem.
- Press and hold the reset button for about 3 seconds, once.
- If F61 returns, switch the boiler off and book a boiler repair.
The gas valve and circuit board must only be tested or replaced by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you smell gas at any point, turn off the boiler, open windows and call 0800 111 999.
How much does it cost to fix Vaillant F61?
F61 repairs usually involve one of the pricier parts in the boiler.
| Repair | Typical UK cost |
|---|---|
| Wiring or harness repair | £100 to £500 |
| Gas valve replacement | £180 to £320 |
| PCB replacement | £360 to £500+ |

Is it worth repairing a Vaillant with F61?
On a boiler under 8 years old, or one still under warranty, yes. On an older, out-of-warranty Vaillant, a gas valve or circuit board is a big spend that’s often better put towards a new boiler.
Here’s the logic. Once a boiler passes 8 to 10 years, the gas valve, board, fan and pump are all ageing together. Replacing one doesn’t stop the next from failing. A new A-rated boiler resets that clock, comes with a manufacturer warranty of often 7 to 10 years, and uses gas more efficiently. Get a free new boiler quote and set it against the repair price.
Does regular servicing prevent F61?
Servicing can’t stop every electronic fault, but it does catch many early. During a boiler service the engineer tests the gas valve, checks the wiring for heat damage or corrosion, and makes sure there’s no water getting onto the electronics.
When should you call an engineer for Vaillant F61?
Call a Gas Safe engineer if F61 comes back after a single reset. There’s no DIY fix for this code.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Vaillant F61 Error
What’s the difference between Vaillant F61 and F62?
Both relate to the gas valve. F61 means the valve can’t be operated properly. The Vaillant F62 error means the flame took too long to go out after the valve closed.
Is Vaillant F61 dangerous?
The boiler locking out is a safety measure, so it isn’t dangerous in itself. Leave it off and don’t keep resetting it. Call 0800 111 999 if you ever smell gas.
Can a power cut or damp cause F61?
It can contribute. Power surges and moisture can both damage the circuit board. If F61 appeared after a power cut or a leak near the boiler, tell the engineer when you book.
Does F61 mean I need a new boiler?
Not always. On a newer boiler it’s a straightforward part replacement. On a Vaillant over 8 years old and out of warranty, a new boiler is often the more reliable and efficient choice. See our Vaillant boiler error codes guide for other codes.
