Worcester Bosch EA 227 Error Code Causes & Fixes

Woken up to a cold house and EA 227 on your Worcester Bosch display? You’re not alone — it’s one of the most common fault codes we get called out to in Edinburgh, and it spikes every time the temperature drops below zero.

The code means the boiler tried to light the burner, couldn’t detect a flame, and has locked itself out as a precaution. It won’t try again until you’ve reset it — but resetting without finding the cause just gets you the same result.

Some of the causes are straightforward enough to sort yourself in a few minutes. Others need a Gas Safe engineer. This guide covers both.

What Does EA 227 Mean on a Worcester Bosch Boiler?

Worcester Bosch classifies EA 227 as a locking error — the boiler makes several ignition attempts, fails to detect ionisation (confirmation that a flame is present), and shuts down completely.

It won’t restart on its own. You’ll see the code on the display alongside the triangle fault symbol, and the boiler stays off until you manually reset it after dealing with the underlying problem.

On the Greenstar 8000 range, the same fault shows as 227 V rather than EA 227 — different display format, same issue.

Why Does EA 227 Keep Coming Back After Reset?

Resetting clears the lockout, but it doesn’t fix anything. If EA 227 returns within minutes or hours of resetting, the boiler is trying to tell you something is genuinely wrong — whether that’s a frozen pipe, a failing component, or a gas supply issue.

Resetting repeatedly on a persistent locking fault can cause additional wear to the PCB and ignition components, making an already fixable problem more expensive. Reset once, see if it holds, and if it doesn’t — stop and call an engineer.

What Causes the EA 227 Fault on a Worcester Bosch?

Is a Frozen Condensate Pipe Causing EA 227?

In Scotland this is the first thing to check between October and March. The condensate pipe is the white plastic pipe running from the boiler to an external drain, and when temperatures drop it can freeze solid, preventing the boiler from expelling waste water and triggering an immediate lockout.

Worcester Bosch confirm this is something most homeowners can resolve without calling anyone out. Find the pipe — it usually exits through an external wall at low level — and look for ice build-up at bends or the open end. Pour warm water along the frozen section (not boiling, which can crack the pipe). A hot water bottle held against it works just as well if you’d rather not stand outside in January. Once thawed, reset once and see if the boiler fires normally.

Watch our video on how to thaw a frozen condensate pipe here for more info.

If your condensate pipe freezes every winter, getting it re-routed internally or properly lagged is a small job that saves a recurring headache.

Could a Gas Supply Problem Be Triggering EA 227?

Before assuming the boiler has developed a fault, check gas is actually reaching it. Try the hob or another gas appliance — if those aren’t working either, the issue is upstream of the boiler entirely.

Make sure the gas isolation valve on the supply pipe is fully open (running parallel with the pipe, not across it), and if you’re on a prepayment meter, check it hasn’t run out. In very cold Scottish winters, the external gas meter or regulator can occasionally freeze — if you suspect that, call SGN on 0800 912 1700 rather than touching anything yourself. SGN handles the majority of Scotland’s gas distribution network.

Is a Faulty Ignition Electrode Causing the EA 227 Lockout?

The ignition electrode creates the spark that lights the gas. The flame sensing electrode confirms the flame is actually present. If either is dirty, cracked, or positioned incorrectly, the boiler sparks away, gets no confirmation signal, and locks out with EA 227.

Carbon deposits building up on the electrode tip are a particularly common cause — especially in boilers that haven’t been serviced for a year or two. An engineer will remove it, inspect it, and clean or replace it as needed. Caught early it’s one of the cheaper EA 227 fixes and is routinely picked up during an annual service before it causes a lockout at all.

Can a Faulty Gas Valve Cause EA 227 on a Worcester Bosch?

Yes — and it’s more common in boilers over eight to ten years old. The gas valve controls the flow of gas to the burner, and when it sticks, fails to open, or loses the ability to modulate correctly, the burner gets no fuel and EA 227 follows. It often develops gradually — intermittent lockouts that get more frequent before becoming a persistent fault.

Gas valve replacement typically costs £200–£400 for parts and labour depending on the model. On an older boiler that’s already racking up repair visits, it’s worth getting a new boiler installation quote at the same time to compare the two options properly.

Could Low Boiler Pressure Trigger the EA 227 Code?

It can contribute, though low pressure more commonly produces different fault codes. Check the pressure gauge on the boiler front — it should read between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. Drop below 1 bar and the ignition sequence can be disrupted. Top up via the filling loop (the braided flexible hose beneath the boiler), then attempt a reset. If pressure keeps dropping after topping up, there’s a leak in the system somewhere that needs locating.

What Is a Blocked Pilot Jet and Can It Cause EA 227?

The pilot jet is a small orifice through which gas passes on its way to the burner. Even a modest build-up of carbon or debris can restrict gas flow enough to prevent successful ignition and trigger EA 227. It’s easy to overlook but surprisingly common in boilers that haven’t been serviced recently. An engineer will clean or replace the jet — usually a quick fix, often picked up as part of a service visit rather than a standalone call-out.

Could the PCB Be Behind a Persistent EA 227 Fault?

If you’ve worked through every other cause and EA 227 keeps coming back, the PCB — the boiler’s main control board — is the likely culprit. A failing PCB can prevent the ignition sequence completing correctly even when every physical component is working fine. PCB replacements typically run £300–£500 or more, and on a boiler that’s already past its best years, most engineers will tell you honestly that a replacement boiler starts to make more financial sense at that point.

How Do You Fix EA 227 on a Worcester Bosch Yourself?

Start with the condensate pipe if it’s cold outside — this single check resolves the majority of Edinburgh EA 227 call-outs in winter. Then check boiler pressure and top up if it’s below 1 bar. Then confirm gas is reaching other appliances in the house.

If all of that checks out, try a single reset: press and hold the button marked with a flame symbol or labelled ‘Reset’ for around 3 seconds. If the boiler fires and runs normally, monitor it for the next 24–48 hours. If EA 227 comes straight back, or reappears the next morning, stop resetting and arrange an engineer visit.

How Much Does It Cost to Fix EA 227 on a Worcester Bosch?

CauseTypical Repair Cost
Frozen condensate pipe (DIY thaw)£0
Frozen condensate pipe (engineer callout)£60–£120
Ignition electrode clean or replacement£100–£200
Pilot jet clean£60–£150
Gas valve replacement£200–£400
PCB replacement£300–£500+

Could an Annual Boiler Service Have Prevented EA 227?

In most cases, yes. Dirty electrodes, blocked jets, and early signs of gas valve wear are exactly what a thorough annual service catches before they cause a mid-winter lockout. Our boiler service costs £110 + VAT and covers a full inspection of all the components most likely to trigger EA 227. If your boiler hasn’t been serviced in a while, it’s the most cost-effective step you can take heading into the colder months.
