Gas Safety In Your Home

If you have a gas leak in your home, it can cause fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Gas leaks are lethal, and it is vital that your gas appliances are fit for purpose.

Even if you are no expert in gas safety, there are some steps you can take to protect your home – and your family. These are some steps you can take to ensure that your home is safe from gas safety risks.

Gas Safety Checks

You should always ensure you get your gas safety check, and this must be carried out on an annual basis. A Gas Registered Engineer is required to do this, and they should be experienced in undertaking these checks, or at least supervised by someone who is. It can be extremely dangerous if gas safety checks are not undertaken properly in the home. If you are renting out property, you should always ensure you make the checks a priority, and that you have a gas safety certificate in Edinburgh. If not, you are potentially putting your tenants in danger. Gas safety checks don’t take long; a maximum of 30 minutes usually, and during this time, the engineer will check the pipework, and ensure there are no leaks.

Boiler Checks

You should also ensure that your boiler annual service is carried out. If you are experiencing issues with your boiler, such as strange noises or smells, you may need a new boiler installation. Make sure you take care of your boiler as some hazards, such as low levels of water or high pressure could lead to explosions. It is always worth being safe, than sorry!

Check Appliances

Although an annual safety check is essential, you can also carry out your own quick checks in between. If you notice any leaks, smells or noises coming from any appliances, you should not just ignore them. Make sure you get anything untoward checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

A carbon monoxide detector is worth having in your home, as if there are any gas leaks, it will inform you. You may not smell the gas and if a gas leak is left, it could cause a fire. Make sure you regularly check the detector too, to ensure it is working efficiently.

Use Appliances Safely

Ensuring gas appliances are only used for their intended purposes is a vital way to reduce the risk of fires in your home. If you have young children in your home, make sure they are aware of the risks involved in tampering with gas appliances, and ensure they are out with their reach, where possible.

Know What to Do

Simply knowing what to do in an emergency can help reduce the risks in your home. For instance, if you do suspect a gas leak, you should ensure windows are open, call an engineer, and leave the property as soon as possible. Even if you suspect there is a gas leak or any issues with your appliances, you should endeavour to get out the property. You should also ensure your family members are aware of what they should do, incase they are in the property on their own at any time.
