Maintaining Your Boiler in the Summer
As the summer approaches, it inevitably means that we don’t need our heating on as much, even with the unpredictable Scottish weather! This doesn’t mean you should completely forget about your boiler though. The opposite is true in fact, you should be taking action to ensure your boiler stays in good condition for the winter. These are some ways to maintain your boiler in the summer.

Don’t Turn it Off
It might seem like the best way to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs would be to switch your boiler off completely. However, this could be more costly and detrimental. When the boiler becomes completely inactive, it is more likely to break down. Even if you are not using it as much, you should not switch it off completely. This is particularly important if you don’t have a combi boiler, as your boiler could end up being inactive for months, which will invite boiler issues. Even in the summer, the nights tend to get cold so instead of turning it off, just turn on your thermostat for low heating in the evening.
Turn off and Bleed Radiators
If you have a combi boiler, you will still want hot water, so you have two choices. You can either change your boiler settings or switch off each radiator when you don’t require any heating in the home. Keeping your radiators off will ensure you don’t end up with heating on without realising it, which will be costly and less energy efficient. If you hear any noises or the radiators are not working the way they should when you turn them on, you could bleed them, as it suggests there is trapped are in the system.
Boiler Replacement
You may not naturally consider summer months as a time to get a new boiler installation, but this could be the best time. You will have a better chance of getting a time slot that suits you, as boiler installations are quieter during the summer months. There tends to be a lot more breakdowns during winter, so its also a good time to get a boiler service. If you notice problems with your boiler, you might be tempted to think that it’ll be ok for now as you don’t need it as much, but it’s better to deal with the issues before they become more problematic.
