2024 Solar Panel Competition Winner

In 2024, we held a Solar Panel competition, and Tina Smith was the lucky winner. The competition was designed to help find someone in need of the energy benefits of solar but who maybe couldn’t quite achieve it on their own.

She was submitted by both her brother and sister, as they felt – as we now also feel – that she deserved this support. We returned to visit her six months after the installation.

Solar Panel Servicing Edinburgh

It’s important to clean your solar panel regularly to keep it working efficiently.

In areas with frequent rainfall, natural rainwater may help wash away some dirt, but it’s not always enough. A build-up of dust and debris can reduce the panel’s performance, lowering its energy output over time. That’s why routine cleaning is essential. Avoid using hot water or harsh detergents, as these can damage the surface. Instead, use a gentle spray of water and a non-abrasive sponge to safely clean your solar panel and maintain its effectiveness.

Common Solar Panel Faults

Like any system, solar panels can develop faults over time. If you notice any drop in performance or unusual behaviour, it’s important to act quickly to prevent further damage and ensure continued efficiency.

Below are some of the most frequently encountered solar panel problems:

Poor or damaged wiring can severely impact the efficiency of your solar energy system. Issues such as loose connections, corrosion, or oxidised terminals may disrupt power flow. It’s strongly advised not to attempt any electrical repairs unless you’re fully qualified. A certified electrician should inspect and resolve the problem safely and thoroughly.

Micro-cracks are tiny fractures that can form on the surface of a solar panel, often invisible at first glance. Over time, these small cracks can expand due to temperature changes and weather exposure, diminishing panel efficiency. They can occur during manufacturing, improper transport, or rough handling. Whether repair is feasible often depends on the panel’s position, roof-mounted systems may need to be removed entirely to address the damage.

Hot spots occur when certain areas of a panel overheat, which can severely affect performance and may even cause irreversible damage. These are commonly caused by dirt build-up, poor soldering, or internal resistance faults. If left unchecked, hot spots can reduce the panel’s output and lifespan significantly.

PID refers to power loss caused by a voltage imbalance between the panel and its grounding system. This issue can lead to a drop in voltage output across the system, decreasing both efficiency and durability. Thankfully, an experienced solar technician can assess the system and apply corrective measures to restore stable performance.
