Should You Upgrade To A Combi Boiler?
Should You Upgrade to a Combi Boiler?
If your boiler is broken or old and worn out, you may be considering a replacement. There are several types of boilers to choose from, and one of the most popular boiler installations is the combi boiler. Combi boilers are a popular choice as they are more compact than other types, such as regular boilers, and easier to install. They can be more efficient than the other options too.
If you are considering a new boiler installation, a combi boiler is probably one of the options you are interested in, but is this right for your home? These are some factors you need to consider.

Size of the Property
You’d be forgiven for thinking that as combi boilers are compact, it doesn’t matter what size your property is. Although partly true, they can be problematic if you have a large home with multiple bathrooms and several people residing at the property. With a combi boiler, you will be unable to use multiple outlets at the same time. For instance, you can’t run two showers simultaneously with a combi boiler. If you have a small property with only a few people living there, the combi boiler is a perfect choice. It is something to consider before you purchase a combi boiler in Edinburgh.
Type of Shower
If you have a power shower on your property or intend to get one, the combi boiler will be incompatible. As the water pressure is dependent on the pressure level you have at the water mains, you can’t have both!
Strength of Mains Pressure
It is important to ensure the water main pressure is strong enough to handle water to the boiler, and other functions that require a water supply, such as flushing toilets and using the washing machine. If your property has a low strength mains pressure, it might not be compatible with a combi boiler. You should find this out before you progress with your boiler installation.
Pipework Age
There can be problems with combi boilers if you live in an older property with the original pipework. It may not be able to deal with the high-water pressure of the combi boiler.
Alternative Boiler Installations
If you have a larger property and you’d prefer a boiler that will allow you to run hot water via multiple outlets simultaneously, you may wish to consider a system boiler. Like the combi boiler, it is also compact. However, you will need an external cylinder. Regular boilers are another option, but you need a storage tank and hot water cylinder, so not the best choice for small properties. Although less common, electric boilers are an alternative to a gas boiler. These tend to be quieter and take up less space than gas boilers, but they are less efficient.
