Tips for Reducing Your Energy Bills

As we are spending more time at home, our energy bills are on the rise. It costs around 2p every time you boil your kettle and 3p an hour to play your game console. If you add all your appliances together, the total cost can be substantial.

If you are struggling with high energy bills, there are some ways you can reduce these. These are our top tips for keeping your costs down.

Tip #1 – Draught Proof Your Home
If you tend to have your heating blazing throughout the day and evening, you will end up spending more on your heating bills. It is far more efficient to look at the gaps causing draughts and make sure your home is draught-proofed. If there are gaps at the bottom of the doors or around the edges, it may be worth using draught excluders to keep the heat. Similarly, if you can feel the cold coming from your windows or hear wind, there is probably a gap or two in the windows. A draught excluder will be useful here.

Tip #2 – Monitor Your Energy Usage
Unless you are aware of your energy usage, you could be spending far more than what you can afford to pay. Monitoring your usage is vital, and make sure you send accurate readings to your energy supplier.

Tip #3 – Compare Suppliers
You have the right to change your energy supplier and it is worth comparing the prices from different energy suppliers. If you find that you are paying more than others, you can make a switch. You may even get rewards for signing up for a new supplier.

Tip #4 – Replace Your Boiler
We use up most of our energy consumption on heating, and if you have an inefficient boiler, you are probably paying more than you would if you replaced it with a modern boiler. Combi boilers are one of the most popular choices for new boilers and will help improve your fuel bills, as well as improving energy efficiency. We can provide you with a boiler replacement Edinburgh or surrounding areas to help improve your energy bills.

Tip #5 – Choose Energy Efficient Appliances
In addition to your boiler replacement, make sure you are using appliances that maximise your energy efficiency. Each appliance has an energy-efficiency (EPC) rating, and it is worth checking this. The most efficient is rating A, and the least efficient is rating D.

Tip #6 – Turn Off Standby
You may not think twice about leaving your TV, games consoles, etc. on standby when leaving the house, but this could be causing your bills to increase. Switch off your appliances when you are not using them.

Tip #7 – Reduce Heating
If you feel cold, there is no need to turn the heating on in every room. You only need to heat the rooms you are using, not the entire house.
