If your Ideal boiler is showing Status 0, it simply means the boiler is on but in standby mode. It’s powered up and ready, but it hasn’t been asked to heat your radiators or produce hot water.
It’s not a boiler fault code.
Think of it like your TV on standby — switched on at the wall, but waiting for you to press the remote.
We’re Ideal Platinum Accredited Installers at The Edinburgh Boiler Company, and we reassure customers about this almost daily. On its own, Status 0 is completely normal. It only becomes a concern if your house is cold or you have no hot water when you expect it.
Why Your Ideal Boiler Is Showing Status 0
Your boiler will sit at “0” whenever there’s no demand coming from the controls. That usually comes down to one of three simple reasons.
No Call for Heat From the Thermostat
If your room thermostat is already satisfied — meaning the room has reached the temperature you set — the boiler won’t fire.
The same applies if:
- The heating timer isn’t currently scheduled on
- The hot water hasn’t been requested
- Smart controls aren’t calling for heat
In many Edinburgh homes, especially flats with wireless thermostats, we often find flat batteries are the real culprit. Read our list of Ideal boiler error codes for more information.
Temperature Set Too Low
If your thermostat is set lower than the current room temperature, the boiler assumes there’s nothing to do.
For example, if the room is already 20°C and the thermostat is set to 18°C, the boiler will stay at Status 0.
Try turning it up a few degrees and give it a minute.
Normal Idle Mode
Sometimes there’s no issue at all. The boiler is simply waiting. Ideal Logic and Ideal Vogue boilers constantly monitor demand, but they won’t fire unnecessarily.
Modern condensing boilers are designed to be efficient. They don’t run continuously — they respond only when needed.
What To Check If You Have No Heating or Hot Water
If your home is cold and the display shows 0, work through these simple checks.
First, turn the thermostat up higher than the current room temperature and listen for the boiler starting.
Next, check the heating timer or programmer. Make sure it’s actually in an “on” period.
Then check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. It should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold. If it’s dropped below 1 bar, the boiler may not respond properly.
If you need to top it up using the filling loop and you’re unsure how, it’s safer to call a Gas Safe registered engineer rather than guessing.
You can also try pressing the reset button once and waiting a few minutes.
Finally, switch the boiler off at the mains for 30 seconds and power it back on.
If it fires normally after that, monitor it.
When Status 0 Isn’t Just Standby
If you’ve confirmed the controls are calling for heat and the boiler still won’t respond, there may be a deeper issue.
In Edinburgh, we occasionally see:
- Faulty thermostats not sending signals
- PCB (control board) issues
- Frozen condensate pipes during sub-zero weather
- Flow sensors not detecting hot water demand
These aren’t DIY fixes. Never remove the casing yourself — modern boilers are sealed appliances and must only be accessed by someone on the Gas Safe Register.
Why This Happens More in Scottish Homes
Scottish heating systems often sit unused overnight in very cold conditions. In older stone-built properties around Edinburgh, internal temperatures can drop quickly, which sometimes exposes weak controls or ageing components.
We also see issues in homes where boilers haven’t been serviced regularly. Small electrical or sensor issues tend to show up when winter arrives.
A yearly boiler service ensures:
- Controls communicate properly
- Pressure is stable
- Internal components are clean and safe

If your Ideal boiler shows Status 0 and everything works once you adjust the thermostat, there’s nothing to worry about.
