What Does “C” Mean on an Ideal Boiler?
If your Ideal boiler is showing a “C”, the simple answer is this: it’s heating your home. It isn’t a fault code. It just means the boiler is in central heating mode and responding to a signal from your thermostat or timer.
We get asked this all the time at The Edinburgh Boiler Company, especially during colder snaps when heating systems across the city are running most of the day.

Ideal Status C Error Causes
When that letter appears on the display, your boiler has received a demand for heat. That usually comes from:
- Your room thermostat
- A wireless control
- A programmed heating schedule
If your radiators are warming up, everything is working as it should.
Sometimes you’ll see “C” even though the boiler isn’t actively firing. That simply means your home has reached the temperature you set.
The boiler stays in heating mode so it can step back in when the temperature drops again. It’s just maintaining comfort in the background.
You might also notice different letters at times:
- “0” usually means standby
- “d” appears when your combi boiler is producing hot water for taps or showers
C Showing on Ideal Boiler But Not Working
While “C” isn’t a fault, if your house feels cold and the radiators aren’t heating properly, it’s worth checking a few things.
In Edinburgh and across Scotland, we see certain patterns more often because boilers here work harder and for longer periods each year.
Low Boiler Pressure
One of the most common causes is low pressure. If the gauge on the front of your boiler is sitting below 1 bar, the system can struggle to push hot water around the radiators properly.
Ideally, it should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold.
If it’s low, you may need to top it up using the filling loop. If you’re unsure how to do that, don’t guess. Overfilling the system can cause leaks and stress on components. It’s always safer to call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Thermostat or Control Issues
Sometimes the issue isn’t the boiler at all. If a thermostat battery is flat, or the programmer is set incorrectly, the boiler may appear to be in heating mode but not behave as expected.
In older Edinburgh tenements especially, we often find outdated controls that don’t communicate reliably with modern condensing boilers. A simple control upgrade can solve ongoing confusion.
Flashing “C” With No Heat
If the display is flashing and the boiler isn’t firing, it could have experienced a temporary interruption — something like a brief ignition issue or safety reset.
You can safely try pressing the reset button once. If it fires up normally and continues running, it was likely a minor interruption.
If it keeps happening, stop there. Repeated resets usually point to something deeper that needs diagnosing properly.
Stuck Zone Valves (More Common in Larger Homes)
In bigger properties with separate heating zones, a valve that controls water flow can stick. When that happens, the boiler may stay in heating mode longer than it should.
This isn’t something to dismantle yourself. These parts involve electrics and water components working together. A qualified engineer should check it safely.
Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Before booking a call-out, you can:
- Make sure the thermostat is set higher than the current room temperature
- Confirm the heating schedule is actually switched on
- Check boiler pressure is between 1–1.5 bar
- Press reset once
- Turn the boiler off at the mains for 30 seconds and back on
If that doesn’t restore proper heating, it’s time for professional help.
Never remove the boiler casing.
Modern Ideal boilers are sealed units and must only be opened by someone on the Gas Safe Register.
Why This Happens More in Scotland
Scottish homes ask more from their heating systems. Long winters, cold loft spaces, older pipework and coastal exposure in areas like Portobello or Leith all put additional strain on central heating systems.
It’s not unusual for boilers here to run heavily from October right through April. That’s why regular servicing is so important. Small pressure or circulation issues tend to show up faster in our climate.
When to Call an Engineer
Call a professional if:
- The boiler keeps flashing
- Pressure repeatedly drops
- Radiators stay cold despite correct settings
- You hear unusual noises
- The boiler needs frequent resets
If gas, ignition or internal components are involved, it must be checked safely.
