The Ideal F1 fault code means your boiler has detected low water pressure and shut down to protect itself. In most cases, you can fix it in under ten minutes by topping the system pressure back up to around 1.0–1.5 bar using the filling loop under the boiler, then pressing reset.
That’s it. This is one of the most common Ideal boiler error codes, howver, if it comes back, there’s an underlying problem that needs a proper look from an engineer.
Here’s the full breakdown from our team at The Edinburgh Boiler Company ready to help homeowners accros Scotland.
What causes the Ideal boiler F1 fault?
The most common reason for the F1 fault code is simply that the system pressure has dropped too low — usually below 1.0 bar on the gauge. There are a few reasons that can happen:
- You’ve recently bled your radiators and didn’t top the pressure back up afterwards — this is one of the most frequent causes we see
- A small leak on the system — dripping radiator valves, weeping pipe joints or connections you can’t easily see can all slowly drain pressure over time
- A passing pressure relief valve (PRV) — if the PRV is worn or faulty, it can let water escape even when it shouldn’t; check outside for a dripping discharge pipe.
- Natural pressure loss over time — all heating systems lose a little pressure gradually; a top-up every few months is perfectly normal
- A faulty or sludge-blocked pressure sensor — if your gauge looks fine but the boiler still shows F1, the sensor itself may be giving a false reading
How to fix the Ideal F1 fault
Before anything else, check your pressure gauge. If it’s sitting below 1.0 bar and the boiler is showing F1, follow these steps:
- Switch the boiler off and let the system cool down so you’re reading the cold pressure
- Find the filling loop under the boiler — a short silver flexible hose with two taps or levers at either end
- Slowly open one valve fully, then gently crack open the second until you hear water entering the system
- Watch the gauge and stop filling at around 1.0–1.5 bar — don’t overfill
- Close both valves fully before doing anything else
- Press the reset button on the boiler to clear the F1 code and restart
Your boiler should fire up normally. Keep an eye on the pressure over the next few days to make sure it’s holding.
When to stop and call an engineer
If the pressure drops back down quickly after topping up, or the F1 code keeps returning, stop filling the system and call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Every time you add fresh water you’re also adding oxygen, which speeds up internal corrosion and sludge build-up — so repeated top-ups without fixing the root cause will create bigger problems down the line.
Call us at The Edinburgh Boiler Company if:
- The F1 fault returns within a day or two of topping up
- You can’t find the filling loop or aren’t confident using it
- The pressure gauge looks normal but the boiler still shows F1
- You can see water dripping from the boiler, pipework or a discharge pipe outside
- Your boiler has been throwing fault codes regularly over recent months
Our Gas Safe registered engineers work with Ideal Logic, Vogue and other Ideal boiler models every day.
We’ll find the root cause — whether that’s a leak, a failing PRV, a flat expansion vessel or a faulty sensor — and fix it properly rather than just resetting the boiler and hoping for the best.

Could your boiler do with a service?
A lot of the faults that trigger F1 — sludge on sensors, a PRV starting to pass, an expansion vessel losing its charge — are things a Gas Safe engineer will spot during a routine annual boiler service, often long before they cause a full breakdown.
We offer annual boiler servicing across Edinburgh and the Lothians, and it’s one of the best ways to avoid unexpected lockouts and keep your warranty valid on newer Ideal boilers.
If you haven’t had your boiler looked at in a while, it’s worth booking a service while everything is still running — not after it’s stopped.
Is it time to replace your boiler?
A single F1 fault usually isn’t cause for concern. But if your Ideal boiler is ageing, repeatedly breaking down, or costing more in repairs each year than it’s worth, replacement may be the smarter long-term decision.
As accredited Ideal and Worcester Bosch installers, we fit new boilers across Edinburgh and the Lothians every day. A modern A-rated combi boiler will run more efficiently, heat your home more reliably, and come with up to a 12-year manufacturer warranty when installed by an accredited engineer — which we are.
We can usually have a new boiler in within 48 hours of your first call, and we’ll always give you an honest recommendation on whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your situation.
Ideal F1 fault — key facts
- F1 = low water pressure lockout on Ideal Logic and most Ideal combi boilers
- Normal cold pressure: 1.0–1.5 bar
- Quick fix: top up via the filling loop, close the valves, press reset
- If it keeps happening: there’s an underlying fault — stop topping up and call an engineer
- Best prevention: annual boiler service and a quick monthly glance at the pressure gauge

FAQS
What’s the difference between the Ideal F1 and F2 fault codes?
F1 is a low water pressure fault you can often fix yourself by topping up via the filling loop. F2 error code is a flow temperature fault, meaning the boiler is overheating or a thermistor is giving an abnormal reading — that one needs a Gas Safe engineer.
My Ideal boiler is showing an L2 fault code — is that related to pressure?
No. The L2 fault on Ideal Logic boilers means the boiler is failing to ignite. It could be a faulty ignition lead, a dirty flame sensor, or a gas supply issue. Avoid repeated resets and call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Does a fault code always mean I need a new boiler?
Not at all — most fault codes are repairable. But if your boiler is over 10 years old and repair costs are stacking up, replacement often makes more financial sense. We’ll always give you an honest recommendation at The Edinburgh Boiler Company.
