What Does A1 Mean on a Worcester Bosch Boiler?
A1 indicates the boiler’s circulation pump is not functioning as it should. Without a working pump, heated water can’t move around the system — radiators don’t heat up, hot water delivery suffers, and the boiler will shut down to prevent internal damage. You may also notice uneven radiator temperatures or ukewarm water from taps before A1 appears on the display.
On some Worcester Bosch models, A1 is accompanied by cause code 281, which confirms the pump is running with air in the system or running dry.
What Causes the A1 Fault on a Worcester Bosch?
Is Low System Pressure Behind A1?
This is the first thing to check and often the simplest fix. If boiler pressure has dropped below 1 bar, the system doesn’t have enough water in it for the pump to circulate properly — it ends up running dry or pulling air, which triggers A1. Look at the pressure gauge on the boiler front. If it’s sitting below 1 bar, top up via the filling loop until it reads between 1 and 1.5 bar, then reset the boiler.
If pressure keeps dropping back down within days or weeks of topping up, there’s a leak somewhere in the system — at a radiator valve, pipe joint, or the pressure relief valve itself — that needs tracing and fixing.
Could Air in the System Be Causing A1?
Air trapped in the pump or pipework causes the pump to lose prime and circulate inefficiently — or not at all. You might hear a gurgling or bubbling sound from the boiler or pipes, and radiators may feel cold at the top while warm at the bottom.
Bleeding radiators can help if the air is in the radiators themselves, but air trapped specifically in the pump needs an engineer to vent it properly. A system that’s repeatedly pulling in air often has an underlying issue with the expansion vessel or a small leak that needs addressing at the same time.
Is the Pump Seized or Jammed?
Pumps can seize after a period of inactivity — particularly at the end of a long, hot summer when the heating system hasn’t run for months. The pump impeller sticks, the boiler tries to run, detects no circulation, and flags A1.
In some cases an engineer can free a seized pump without replacing it — a far cheaper outcome than a full pump replacement. It’s worth calling sooner rather than later, as a pump running seized generates heat that can cause additional damage.
Could Sludge Build-Up Be Blocking the Pump?
In Edinburgh properties with older heating systems and no magnetic filter fitted, black iron oxide sludge accumulates in the system over years and gradually clogs the pump impeller.
The pump loses efficiency, circulation drops, and A1 eventually appears. If this is the cause, clearing the pump alone won’t solve the problem — the system needs a power flush or a chemical flush to remove the sludge, plus a magnetic filter fitted to prevent recurrence.
Is the Flow Temperature Sensor Causing a False A1 Reading?
Less commonly, a faulty flow temperature sensor can report abnormal readings that the PCB interprets as a pump fault, triggering A1 even when the pump itself is working correctly. An engineer will run diagnostics to rule this in or out — if the pump checks out physically but A1 keeps returning, the sensor or PCB is the next investigation.
Can You Fix A1 on a Worcester Bosch Yourself?
The only self-help step that makes sense is checking and topping up boiler pressure. If pressure is low, top up to 1–1.5 bar via the filling loop and reset once. If the boiler runs normally afterwards and pressure holds, low pressure was the issue.
Everything beyond that — bleeding the pump, freeing a seized impeller, power flushing, sensor testing — needs a Gas Safe engineer. The pump sits inside the boiler casing and attempting to access or free it without the right training risks both personal safety and further damage to the boiler.
