If your Ideal boiler is showing FL, F/L, or LF, it means the boiler has tried to light but failed to detect a flame. In simple terms, the burner didn’t ignite properly — or it lit briefly and then went out.
When that happens, the boiler shuts itself down as a safety precaution.

Ideal Boiler FL Fault Code Causes
Your boiler follows a very specific ignition sequence. It opens the gas valve, creates a spark, lights the burner, and then confirms a stable flame. If any part of that chain fails, it locks out.
Here are the most common causes we see across Edinburgh homes.
1. Gas Supply Problems (Most Common)
Before anything else, check whether you actually have gas.
- Are other gas appliances working?
- Has your gas meter been topped up if you’re on prepayment?
- Has the emergency control valve been accidentally knocked closed?
In flats around Leith or older tenements in Marchmont, we often see shared meter cupboards where valves get turned off by mistake.
If there’s no gas reaching the boiler, it simply can’t ignite.
2. Low Boiler Pressure
If your pressure has dropped too low — usually under 1 bar — the boiler may struggle to complete the ignition cycle.
Check the pressure gauge on the front:
- It should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when cold.
If it’s low, you may need to top it up using the filling loop. If you’re unsure how, don’t guess. Over-pressurising can cause leaks or stress internal components. It’s always safer to ask a local Gas Safe registered heating engineer.
3. Frozen or Blocked Condensate Pipe (Very Common in Scotland)
During freezing weather in Edinburgh, especially in exposed areas like Portobello or coastal properties, the condensate pipe can freeze.
If that pipe is blocked with ice, the boiler won’t fire.
Signs include:
- Gurgling noises
- Boiler locking out during freezing temperatures
- Water backing up internally
You can sometimes thaw an external condensate pipe using warm (not boiling) water. But if you’re not certain which pipe it is, get advice before attempting anything.
4. Ignition Electrode or Flame Sensor Issue
Inside the boiler, a small electrode creates the spark and confirms a flame is present. Over time it can become dirty, worn, or misaligned.
When that happens:
- The spark may not light the gas properly
- The flame may not be detected
- The boiler shuts down for safety
This requires removing the casing, which must only be done by someone on the Gas Safe Register. Never attempt this yourself.
5. Blocked Flue or Air Intake
Your boiler needs the correct airflow to burn gas safely. In some Scottish homes, especially older properties with longer flue runs, we’ve seen:
- Debris
- Bird nests
- ice build-up
If airflow is restricted, the boiler won’t allow ignition to continue.
Again, this is not a DIY check beyond visually inspecting the outside flue terminal for obvious blockage.
6. Gas Valve or PCB Fault
If the gas valve fails to open correctly, or the main control board (PCB) isn’t managing the ignition sequence properly, the boiler won’t light.
These are internal components. Diagnosis requires proper testing equipment and training.
Repeated resets without fixing the root cause can make things worse.

Before booking a call-out, you can safely:
- Check other gas appliances are working
- Confirm the yellow gas isolation valve is fully open
- Ensure you have credit if on a prepayment meter
- Check boiler pressure is between 1–1.5 bar
- Press the reset button once
If it fires and runs normally, monitor it. However, If it locks out again, stop there and call a professional.
When FL Turns Into L2 or F2
On some Ideal models, FL or LF may also show as other Ideal boiler error codes:
- L2 (Ignition Lockout)
- F2 (Flame Loss)
They all relate to the same core issue — the boiler couldn’t maintain a stable flame.
